Learning to sail.

The Mission Bay Aquatic Center’s sailing program is one of the most comprehensive sailing instructional programs in the world. Our 40 years of program development along with our professional and friendly staff combine to offer the best youth sailing instruction available. Thousands of campers have developed a life-long love of sailing at The Watersports Camp. Our sailing staff are experienced, year-round instructors for Mission Bay Aquatic Center and are US SAILING certified.

Pro Tip:

In addition to learning to sail, campers will learn the natural forces and related science as part of US Sailing's Reach Iniative to promote interest in STEM through sailing.


Basic Sailing

Basic Sailing.

Campers will begin their journey to becoming a sailor, learning the basics of sailing in their very own 8-foot Sabot. Each morning starts with short classroom instruction before heading out for on-the-water learning and practice.

Advanced Sailing

Advanced sailing group.

This activity is intended as a follow-up to basic sailing or for the camper with a good background in sailing (consent of instructor required). Campers will begin working together with other sailors in the multi-hand Holder-14, a 14-foot monohull sailboat with a main and jib sail.

Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Campers must have completed Basic Sailing Camp at The Watersports Camp or equivalent.


Hobie Cat Sailing

After completing Advanced Sailing it’s time to move on to the fast and fun 16-foot Hobie Getaway. Unlike conventional single-hulled sailboats, this multihulled vessel is built for one thing... speed. Campers will develop their sailing knowledge, confidence, and experience through teamwork and cooperation. Instruction includes rigging, sail trimming, boat handling, racing and righting the boats after a capsize.

Prerequisite: Campers must have completed Advanced Sailing Camp at The Watersports Camp or equivalent.


Afternoon Basic Sailing

Turning the mark.

This activity is the same as the morning Basic Sailing activity but perfect for the camper that wants to learn in windier conditions or cannot attend the morning camp.

Rates:

  • Full-Day Camp: +$50
    (This activity can be added as an upgrade to the full-day camp for an additional fee.)
  • Half Day Camp: $265

Afternoon Laser Sailing

Laser sailing.

This camp is a culmination of our sailing program with emphasis on making boats go fast! Campers will put to the test all they have learned to get them to this point. Campers will train on the Olympic-class, high performance Laser mastering points of sail, sail trim and getting a taste of sailing as a competitive sport. Advanced boat handling skills, racing fundamentals, and regattas are a part of this exciting and competitive sailing activity.

Rates:

  • Full-Day Camp: +$50
    (This activity can be added as an upgrade to the full-day camp for an additional fee.)
  • Half Day Camp: $265

Prerequisite: Students must have a solid foundation in the fundamentals of sailing and have completed Basic, Advance, and Hobie Cat Sailing at The Watersports Camp or equivalent.
